LMIA and Work Permit

A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document that an employer in Canada may need to get before hiring a foreign worker. A worker would need an LMIA, and a job offer letter, to apply for a Work Permit.A work permit is a legal document permitting a foreign national to engage in employment while inside of Canada.

LMIA Exempt Workers, on the other hand, may apply for and be granted a work permit with a job offer only, without the need of an LMIA. An employer-specific work permit lets you work in Canada according to the conditions on your work permit.

Temporary Resident Permit (TRP)

TRP allows a foreign national to enter and/or remain in Canada as a visitor, student, or worker for a given period. Only foreign nationals present in Canada have temporary resident status. A TRP does not allow a foreign national to work in Canada. This permit may be cancelled by an officer at any time.
